Basic Summary
Fairytale retelling. That's what I thought when I read the back....and in a sense that's true. But this is no ordinary re-telling. This is a re-writing. In-Depth Summary Two beloved and timeless tales—Snow White and Sleeping Beauty—find new life in these magical and imaginative retellings filled with romance and adventure. Snow After the tragic death of her mother, Jessica’s father finds love again. But as Jessica grows into a beautiful young woman, it becomes clear that her stepmother is wildly—and murderously—jealous of her. With no choice, Jessica escapes to London and finds herself surrounded by an odd band of outcasts who accept her into their makeshift family. And when her stepmother—repentant and supposedly seeking forgiveness—appears in the city, Jessica must decide whom to trust. Beauty Sleep Cursed at birth, Princess Aurore is fated to prick her finger at age sixteen and sleep for one hundred years. As the days go by, the adventurous princess makes a habit of exploring the lands beyond the castle, where her warmth and generosity earn her the devotion of the townspeople. But when she finds out the impending curse will not only harm her—but the entire kingdom—Aurore embarks on a dangerous quest to end the evil magic. Will she be able to put a stop to the curse before it’s too late? My Review Okay, hands down, one of the best fairy tale re-tellings I've ever read. You can't even really tell it's a fairy tell for most of the book, but it really does capture the essence of the story. Basic Summary
This generation is in serious pain, but no one seems to be handing out hope these days. Reggie Dabbs is a speaker that offers hope and love to all who need it, as a result he gets hundreds, even thousands, of emails, Facebook messages, and letters from kids who are hurting. This book is composed of their letters and Reggie's responces to their heart tearing letters. In-Depth Summary “I get abused and hurt so much, and no one seems to care…” These are real words written by a real girl. There are thousands more just like her. Her pain is real. Her story is true. But her voice has been hidden… until now. For those who will dare to listen to the truth, tragedy, and triumph found in the desperate words of a generation eclipsed by the white noise of a culture too busy to care, there are incredible stories to be unearthed. This book is a shocking, inspirational exposé of just a few of these stories—hidden in plain sight. It is written in response to thousands of personal letters and messages, both for those in crisis and for those who share that crisis with them everyday. These are the stories, the responses, and ultimately the hope that we all should own for each other. As one of the most sought-after public speakers in the world, Reggie Dabbs has shared his own incredible story with millions of adults and students each year for the past twenty-five years. Because of social media, many of them share their own stories with him in return. These letters contain their stories with names and details changed to protect their anonymity, having otherwise been kept in their original form. They are followed by Reggie’s actual response of hope to that individual. John Driver, MS—a former public secondary educator, as well as a fifteen-year community youth advocate and mentor—adds additional insight and “Breathable Moments” for educators, parents, friends, and family. Equipping readers to help those in crisis continue breathing another day, Just Keep Breathing provides both the inspiration and the information needed to respond confidently and appropriately—and see those we care about make it to another sunrise. My Review I got this book at Winterfest, the first time I'd ever heard Reggie Dabbs speak. I'm a book worm and his booth had books...so I bought one. What I did not know was what Reggie Dabbs normally did, a speaker that gives hope to the hopeless. Having struggled with mental illness myself, I was taken back by the intensity of the book. I had to read it slowly, and in parts. It was that raw. Reggie's responces are good, sometimes I thought they were lacking, but there is limited space in a book, but I did find that after reading Just Keep Breathing: A Shocking Expose of Letters You Never Imagined a Generation Would Write, I found that I had a passion for helping those who struggle just like me. If struggling with mental illness, these kids stories you can definitely relate to, and you can find hope within the pages of this book. If you know someone struggling or just have a passion for helping, John Driver's Breathable Moments section will help you out as well. The Infinite Sea is the continuation of the fight for survival....which now is in the hands of mere kids. What are the aliens planning? Why go through all these waves when there's a simplier answer? What is REALLY going on? In-Depth Summary How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity. Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race. Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate. My Review I enjoyed this book much, much better then the first one. The Infinite Sea really threw me for a loop and now I'm dying to get the third and final book. The only downside to the book is that it switches the point of views several times throughout the book. I typically don't enjoy that, but in this book I think the author uses it very well...just not my favorite tactic. You'll definitely love the moral and ethical dillemas. Aliens. The Apocolypse. Billions are dead, those that are left are the strong, the fight for survival is on. In-Depth Summary After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one. Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother--or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up. My Review I have to admit, I watched the movie first. It was a great book, only....well, it spoiled the book for me. The movie was very accurate and for me, took the joy out of reading it. I did enjoy the moral struggles and the very well thought out end of the world plot. It's a struggle for survival, and for hope. Told from the pov of a pre-adolescent girl, Inkheart was one of my favorite childhood books. In a world with book loving and collecting family members, characters that come to life, and adventure....I wanted to be drug into the story myself. In-Depth Summary One night, Meggie's father reads aloud from Inkheart, and an evil rulter named Capricorn escapes from the pages of the book and lands in their living room. Suddenly, Meggie is living the kind of adventure she has only read about in books. And she must somehow learn to harness the magic that has conjured this nightmare. Only Meggie can rewrite the stroty that has changer her life forever. This is Inkheart, a timeless tale about books, about imagination, about life. Dare to read it aloud! My Review I read this book when I was in middle school and I loved it. I found the rest of the series and hooked in. When I saw there was a movie I eagerly watched it, and was disappointed, but that's beside the point. I recommend this book to any adult who wants to encourage reading for their kid, or any kid or even teenager who loves reading. Meggie is such a relatable character for bookworms. My only....issue...with this book is that since it's told from a kid's point of view, it kinda frustrates me. My Rating: 6/10 |
