Recently I decided to re-read the Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth (my 6th time). For those of you living under a rock for all these years, (and didn't see the movies...or saw the movies but didn't read the books????? pansycake) Divergent is a coming of age novel about this young adult named Beatrice (who later changes her name to Tris) living in this dystopian world where everyone is separated into five factions. Now this concept of five factions is personally fascinating to me because the factions are divided based on ideals, concepts, and values....and that's kind of what I'm seeing in the real world too. Anyways, she finds out that she is Divergent, which means she doesn't just think one way, she has the ability to defy stereotypes and think outside of what's expected of her. Being Divergent also means she's aware during simulations, and that she can resist/defy serums. Basically she's the badass who has real human emotional struggles, and it's a book series EVERYONE needs to read.
That being said, there should always be a footnote/warning to tell you the series is an emotional roller-coaster. You will laugh, you will wince, you will scream at the book, you will feel second hand embarrassment, you will be happy, you'll be tense, and lastly you'll just flat out cry. It's a very bumpy ride emotionally. I'm a huge fan of Veronica Roth. Her writing style is amazing (not everyone shares this opinion but I tend to tell them to shut up), and it held my attention 100%. I would never lie about that. This is 100/10 and if you need a pick me up series to get you back into reading, want to introduce yourself into the YA Dystopian genre, or just need to escape from your own emotional pain into the emotional pains of an imaginary character(s), then THIS IS THE SERIES FOR YOU!!!! I've read it six times now, I'll probably read it a bunch more! You won't regret it!!! |
